14 people shot, including 3 children, in East Garfield Park. ‘It’s over by three seconds.’

Fourteen people, including three children, were shot in a drive-by shooting in East Garfield Park on the West Side Monday night, Chicago police said.

The children are 3, 11 and 13 years old, Police Supt. David Brown told reporters. All three were in a serious condition. The other victims were between the ages of 31 and 56, police said.

The shooting happened around 9 p.m. when some people gathered in the 2700 block of West Flournoy Street for a vigil and others were out for Halloween, police said. It is not known who the watch was for.

“It’s about three seconds,” Brown said outside Stroger Hospital, where many of the wounded were taken. “The car is pulling out after driving and shooting randomly into the crowd.

“We don’t have a motive,” he said, adding that officials believe there were two shooters.

“We are always worried about retaliation of course, but we don’t know much about this, whether it was related to a gang conflict or some personal conflict yet, but as soon as we know we will share with the public ,” Brown said. “And obviously we are deploying additional police resources in the area to make sure we can prevent any retaliation if that is the case.”

All of the victims were taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from critical to non-life threatening, police said. A 37-year-old man and a 48-year-old man were in critical condition, police said. Most of the wounded were taken to Stroger Hospital.


Police are looking for evidence after a mass shooting on Halloween night in East Garfield Park on the West Side.

A woman was hit by a car while trying to escape the shooting, police said. She was in fair condition with scrapes on her body. No one was in custody.

Brown said the shooting was captured on police surveillance video, which investigators are reviewing. Detectives are also waiting for victims to complete treatment so they can interview them.

A reward of up to $15,000 is being offered for information leading to charges or a conviction. Anyone with information was asked to submit a tip to cpdtip.com.


Authorities work at the scene of a mass loading that left 14 people injured on Monday night. One person was hit by a vehicle at the scene. No one was in custody late Monday.
