Carbios Stock – Carbios develops biological processes for recycling plastic waste. Now the French company wants to use the technology in the textile industry and has collaborated with important partners for this purpose
Plastic pollution is one of the biggest challenges of our time. It was this problem that Carbios took over. A French biochemical company is developing a biological process to recycle plastic waste. In its process, Carbios breaks down each type of PET (the main polymer in polyester bottles, trays and textiles) into its basic components, which can then be recycled to make new PET plastic of the same quality as the virgin material.
Having already made great strides in the packaging sector in terms of plastic recycling, Carbios technology is now poised to fundamentally change the recycling of synthetic fibres. To this end, the group has collaborated with On, Puma, Patagonia and Salomon to promote the circular economy in the textile industry. The partners will research how to recycle their products and develop solutions to take back used polyester items.

Order Here CLERMONT-FERRAND, France–( BUSINESS WIRE )–The promise of endless recycled PET plastic is one step closer today, as a consortium – Carbios, L’Oréal, Nestle Waters, PepsiCo and Suntory Beverage & Food Europe – announced Enzymatically Recycled Successful production of the world’s first food grade PET plastic bottle made entirely from plastic.
All the consortium companies have successfully produced sample bottles – based on Carbio’s enzymatic PET recycling technology – for some of their main products including: Biotherm®, Perrier®, Pepsi Max®** and Orangina®.
Today’s announcement is the culmination of nearly 10 years of research and development at Carbios to develop a new process and enzyme that occurs naturally in compost piles to break down the membranes of normally dead plant leaves. Adapting this enzyme, Karbios refined the technology and optimized this enzyme to break down any type of PET plastic (regardless of color or complexity) into building blocks that can be converted into building blocks like new. Carbios patented enzymatic PET recycling process enables a variety of PET plastics to be recycled into food grade rPET of unparalleled quality. PET plastic that would otherwise be wasted or incinerated can now be returned to a continuous circular recycling system. And it can be achieved at high speed – breaking down 97% of plastic in 16 hours – 10,000 times more efficient than any biological plastic recycling trial to date (peer-reviewed article in Nature).
Together, these brands will work to scale this innovation to help meet global demand for sustainable packaging solutions. In September 2021, Carbios will break ground on a demonstration plant before commissioning an industrial facility with a capacity of 40,000 tonnes by 2025.
Commenting on the announcement, Jean-Claude Lumaret, CEO of Carbios, said: “For the first time, we have produced clean food grade bottles from colored and complex enzymatically recycled plastic with the same properties as virgin PET and proven in consortium collaboration. The technology’s effectiveness with the world’s leading brands This is a truly transformative innovation that can completely close the global PET plastic supply loop, so that it never ends up as waste.
Jacques Playe, L’Oréal’s Global Head of Packaging and Product Development added: “We have been working with Carbios since 2017 to create this first bottle made from PET derived from enzymatic recycling technology, as an alternative to mechanical recycling. We have been able to ensure Happy. Today the potential of these bottles is in the pilot stage and we are happy to develop the packaging of the future with our partners. This is a positive innovation for the coming years that shows the promise of bringing eco-friendly packaging to the market and is part of a circular initiative that started more than 15 years ago. “
Advanced Recycling Company Carbios Reels In Major Pet Producer
Jean-Francois Brois, Head of Packaging Materials Science and Environmental Sustainability Nestlé Waters Global R&D, said: “The quality of the prototype bottles made from recycled colored PET materials is almost the same as that of clean virgin PET. When we reach industrial scale, this enzymatic recycling technology gives us a high -Help Nestle Waters to produce quality rPET bottles and boost the circular economy and reduce the use of waste plastics.
Ron Khan, Global Vice President, Packaging, Beverages, PepsiCo, said: “PepsiCo is committed to building a circular economy to achieve our vision that packaging is never wasted. We are committed to reducing the use of single-use plastics. And with Carbios advanced enzymatic recycling technology, we keep valuable ingredients in the circular economy.” , can help reduce waste and take another step towards a truly closed loop system.
Roberto Vanin, Chief R&D Officer, Suntory Beverage & Food Europe, said: “The global issue of plastic waste requires transformative thinking, creative partnerships and innovative brands coming together to find new solutions. Continue to invest in new ways to manage waste packs and be 100% sustainable. Developing a true circular like this state-of-the-art technology from Carbios will be essential for Suntory Beverage and Food Europe to achieve its plastic ambitions.
Enzymatic recycling overcomes the degradation problems in conventional recycling and can be used on any type of PET plastic. As the Carbios recycling process operates under mild conditions, it can reduce the carbon footprint of PET waste treatment by saving 30% of CO2 emissions compared to a conventional blend, considering the production of virgin PET.***

The successful completion of these first food-grade bottles is an important milestone in the validation of the consortium’s Carbios technology. This partnership is part of a growing trend among brands collaborating across industries to address these global challenges, working towards a circular world, where we limit the production of pure plastic.
Carbios will license its technology to PET manufacturers worldwide, accelerating the global adoption of enzymatic recycling for all types of PET-based products.
Around 70 million tonnes of PET plastic is produced worldwide each year – equivalent to around 20% of all plastics – but due to repeated thermomechanical processes, the plastic used in packaging breaks down over time and requires new plastic to maintain its quality. .
Carbios has been able to naturally hypercharge an enzyme from the compost pile that breaks down the membranes of dead plant leaves. PET plastic is made from a string of building blocks, also known as monomers, and this optimized enzyme is very efficient at cutting PET plastic into these building blocks: tepalic acid and ethylene glycol. These monomers can be recombined in an infinite, virgin quality loop to recreate PET polymer, in food grade quality.
