Daughter of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s is revealed to the world in first public appearance

Seoul, South Korea

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has overseen the launch of a “new type” of an intercontinental ballistic missile with his young daughter, whose existence has not been previously confirmed.

Dramatic pictures released by the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) appear to show Kim holding hands with a girl while an ICBM rests on a nearby mobile launch pad.

KCNA claimed the “new” missile seen by the pair was a Hwasong-17, saying it had been launched from Pyongyang International Airport, traveling a distance of 999.2 kilometers (621 miles).

Japan warned after Friday’s launch that the new missile could reach the continental United States.

Kim Jong Un said the test was intended to “clearly demonstrate” his country’s ability to respond to “hysterical war exercises of aggression by enemies who seek to destroy peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula,” according to a KCNA report.

Japanese officials said Friday’s launch, which landed about 210 kilometers (130 miles) west of the Japanese island of Oshima, was not the first time North Korea had launched an ICBM that experts and officials say could theoretically reach the United States.

According to a report by the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) at the time, the height and range of Friday’s missile was lower than that of Pyongyang’s March 24 missile test, which recorded the highest altitude and longest of any missile North Korea has ever tested. The missile reached an altitude of 6,248.5 km (3,905 miles) and flew a distance of 1,090 kilometers, KCNA reported.

And in 2017, then US Defense Secretary James Mattis said that the missile launched by North Korea that year had demonstrated the ability to hit “everything in the world”.

Despite the missile’s theoretical range, Pyongyang’s ability to mount a nuclear warhead and send it to a target remains unproven.

Ballistic missiles are launched into space before coming back down to Earth. Experts have yet to see conclusive evidence that North Korea can get a warhead that can successfully fire back into the Earth’s atmosphere.

Kim Jong Un’s threats to the US and South Korea were also nothing new.

After the missile test in October, North Korea’s leader warned his opponents that his nuclear forces were fully prepared for “real war”.

“Our nuclear combat forces … have once again demonstrated their full readiness for real war to contain the enemies,” Kim said in a KCNA statement.

Very little is known about the private life of Kim Jong Un or his family.

Saturday’s news report did not name Kim’s daughter, who appeared in state media for the first time. However, in 2013 former basketball star Dennis Rodman told Britain’s The Guardian newspaper that Kim had a “baby” named Ju Ae.

Rodman said he spent time with his family, describing Kim as a “good dad” and that he spoke with Kim’s wife, Ri Sol Ju.

“I was holding their baby Ju Ae and talking to Mrs. Ri,” he told the newspaper.

Speculation that Ri might be pregnant was sparked in 2012 when a photo released by state media showed her wearing a long coat that may have hidden a bump. However, the North Korean authorities remained silent on this matter.

The state media only announced the marriage of Kim and Ri in 2012. in July, about three years after South Korean intelligence believes the wedding took place.

But that changed in 2018, when North Korea’s state media gave her the new title of “respected first lady,” a step up from the previous title of “friend” and, analysts say, a sign that she is coming into her own. cult

According to South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS), Kim and Ri have three children together.

North Korea has been ruled as a hereditary dictatorship since it was founded in 1948 by Kim Il Sung. His son Kim Jong Il took power after his father’s death in 1994. And Kim Jong Un took power 17 years after Kim Jong Il died.
