Iga Swiatek makes honest admission regarding shock loss to Aryna Sabalenka

Iga Swiatek admitted that Arina Sabalenka played better during their WTA Finals match and that the Belarusian deservedly won the match. Swiatek, the top-ranked player in the world, exited the WTA Finals after suffering a 6-2 2-6 6-1 loss to Sabalenka in the semi-finals.

“Arina just played better, you could see that. In the second set I wanted to transform her, but in the third I felt like it was not my kind of game. I feel like I was playing too risky. And in the third, she for Definitely took her chances and she served really well,” Swiatek told WTA Insider.

In 2022, Swiatek played many matches and also enjoyed a lot of success. This year, Swiatek made nine finals – winning eight of them, including two Grand Slam titles.

Also, there was a period between February and July during which Swiatek won 37 matches in a row. “Not gonna lie, I’ve been waiting for this moment. It was pretty hard to see the finish line but still be fully motivated & ready for every match.

The season was so intense and I am so proud of myself that I could play so well until the end. I’m glad it happened,” Sviatek reflected.

Swiatek fell short of winning her first WTA Finals title

After Ashleigh Barty announced her retirement from tennis, Swiatek quickly established herself as the new face of the women’s game.

In early April, Swiatek replaced Barty in the top spot. Since then, there have been no changes in the world number 1 ranking. After winning two Grand Slams and securing the year-end No. 1 ranking, Swiatek was hoping to cap off her amazing season by winning her first WTA Finals title.

Swiatek went through the group stage quite easily, but then suffered a surprise defeat to Sabalenka. Swiatek will now have to wait for at least one more season to win her first WTA Finals title.
