Iggy Pop – ‘Every Loser’
“My mind’s on fire when I gotta retire,” declares a defiant Iggy Pop at the start of his latest studio release. “Madness” is an unapologetic track that strongly shows that the 75-year-old Godfather still has a lot of passion for life.
For “Every Loser,” Pop surrounds himself with an elite cast of musicians that includes Chad Smith, Duff McKagan, Travis Barker, Stone Gossard, Josh Klinghofer, Dave Navarro, Chris Chaney, Eric Avery and the late Taylor Hawkins to Help set the fuel. Out of 11 ways.
“Love is forced / It’s wise not to say / God made me a junkie / But the devil told me,” Pope declares as he invites the deadly delusion and darkness of drug addiction “Strong Out” Johnny comes in at the final price, points out.
“New Atlantis” is a personal love letter to his adopted city of Miami. Pop relaxes in his familiar surroundings while watching things slowly darken as he sings, “Some say the world’s gonna end in fire / Some say ice / Me, I’m just a little bird, fish And I see butterflies.”
“Modern De Ripoff” finds Pop delivering an Alice Cooper tone when complaining about how much things have changed since he started in the business 50 years ago. “A respectable man wouldn’t curse so much/At least I’m still kickin’,” sings an angry pop.
“New Punk” serves as the album’s signature track with Pop reminiscing about his career, accomplishments and the benefits of fame. It’s been a rewarding journey and Pop knows he’s done well for himself when he reveals he doesn’t need to sing because he’s broadcasting.
The initial attitude of the new material can best be summed up when Pop declares, “I’m not a weak, suburban boy / I’m a terrorist.”
He is truly the same musical terror with the indomitable swagger he first graced the world with as a member of the Stooges.
It’s abundantly clear that Pop has no intention of stepping off his throne anytime soon as he sings, “I’ve got it all / And when I’m done, I’m still looking for fun.”
