The United States continues in 2023. World Junior Championship Group B game, and the Americans will face Slovakia on Wednesday afternoon.

It got off to a slow start on Monday, but the USA opened the tournament with a 5-2 win over Latvia. After a scoreless first half, the two teams traded goals in the middle frame heading into the final 20 minutes. The USA scored three unanswered goals in the third period to secure the victory.

Five different players found the back of the net, with Red Savage and Sean Behrens leading the way with a goal and an assist each. Trey Augustine went 15 of 17 for the win.

“We just settled down in the third and played with more character,” USA head coach Rand Pecknold said. “I thought we were nervous in the first two quarters and made a few mistakes that ended up in the back of the net. But we had a lot of chances, so we talked about letting our character come through in the third.”

Slovakia lost their tournament opener on Tuesday, falling 5-2 to Finland. After both teams found the back of the net once, the Finns scored three goals in the second to take a 4-1 lead and held on for the win in the third.

Both goals for Slovakia were scored by Peter Repcik and goalkeeper Patrikas Andrisiks was scored after 15 shots.

The second period

17:37 – A five-and-a-board play scored Connors. A really ill-timed penalty by Connors has already scored a few goals against the USA. The rest of the second, Slovakia would go on the power play and have another 2:34 man advantage to start the third.

17:35 – Bad knock for Kenny Connors’ role of David Natny. Seconds after getting rid of the puck, the Slovakian defenseman took a hard drive into the boards. Officials intend to review this.

17:34 – Logan Cooley was the best player in the USA during this period. He created two chances himself, using his speed to outrun Slovakian defenders, but don’t count on him getting a shot in either attempt when he was left alone against Guyana.

17:27 – GOAL! Another Slovakian goal, this time by Mesar. His shot from the circle falls off the stick of Charlie Stramel and Mbereko has no chance to stop. Three goals in 3:19 and Slovakia was down 2-1 to take a 4-2 lead.

17:25 – GOAL! Robert Baco put Slovakia ahead with Mberek’s goal. Baco bursts in from his own area after a clean break from Slovakia and puts it over the left shoulder of the USA keeper. 3-2 Slovakia, two goals down in less than two minutes.

17:20 – GOAL! Dalibor Dvorski crosses Slovakia’s lead to equalise. in 2023 the new prospect rips Mbereko’s blocker out of the slot with Adam Sykora’s excellent screen in front of him. It was 2-2 with less than 10 minutes left in the middle frame.

17:18 – Hutson is given a penalty by Petrovski and Slovakia go on the power play for the second time tonight.

17:16 — Slovakia with their best chance of the period. Filip Mesar pins the needle on a plate cut to Servac Petrovski, who tries to put it back but Mbereko makes a great stop.

17:13 – A much more even pace for this period than the first. Both Slovakia and the United States make the playoffs. Not much extended offensive zone time for either side, lots of driving back and forth.

17:06 — Slovakia kills off the rest of Nemec’s penalty to level again.

17:03 – USA starts the second minute with just over a minute left on the power play.

End of first half: USA 2, Slovakia 1

16:45 – After a goal-filled first five minutes, both teams settle and the USA leads 2-1 after the first. A Slovakian goal woke up the Americans early and they controlled the game from then on. USA will start the second half with 1:12 man advantage.

16:44 — Now the USA is back on the power play moment after killing the Snuggerud trip. Simon Nemec is invited on his journey.

16:43 — USA shows a very structured penalty as Slovakia does not convert the man advantage.

16:40 – Slovakia starts their first power play as Jimmy Snuggerud sits for two minutes due to a trip.

16:37 — In the USA, Slovakia plays in reserve. It can be said that the speed of the Americans is a concern for the Slovaks. They want to sit back and play conservative, not get caught in the transition game.

16:31 — Not the cleanest of final minutes for the USA in their own zone, as Slovakia were able to keep the puck after making numerous mistakes.

16:24 – The US is buzzing now. They nearly scored again on a Brindley goal, but the whistle finally blew after a good five seconds of beating a loose puck in the crease with Gajan on his back.

16:23 – GOAL! Gavin Brindley shows great hand-eye co-ordination to deflect Lane Hutson’s shot over Gajan’s shoulder. The Slovakian goalkeeper could not do anything. The United States takes its first lead with 13-12 left in the game.

16:22 — Heavy pressure from the second PP bloc in the US. Jackson Blake had a chance to go down and out with Gajan, but hit the outside. Arguably, the second group was superior to the USA’s best PP unit to start this tournament.

16:19 — Good aim confirmed. It was the Slovakian defender who brought down Boucher in Guyana. 1-1 game early. A missed challenge earns Slovakia a penalty and the USA returns to the power play.

16:17 — Slovakia challenge for goalkeeper interference.

16:16 – GOAL! With just seconds left on the man advantage, Tyler Boucher scored on a rebound. The crafty Cutter Gauthier passed to Rutger McGroarty, who headed it to the net, and Boucher hit the back of the net. Draw – 15:18.

16:15 – Less than five minutes into the game, the USA gets a power play opportunity as Alex Ciernik is called for hooking. The United States was 0-for-2 on the PP against Latvia.

16:11 – GOAL! Slovakia scores first when Libor Nemec fires home the third attempt. His first two shots were blocked, but his third puck went through Mberek’s five-hole. 1-0 Slovakia after just over two minutes.

16:08 — The puck has dropped and it’s USA vs. Slovakia.

Foreplay

15:20 — Lines for Slovakia vs. USA Adam Gajan gets the start in net after being the odd goaltender against Finland. Both Patrik Andrisik and Matej Marinov saw action in the opener.

15:00 — The United States uses the same offensive lines and defensive pairings as it did against Latvia. Kaiden Mbereko, who was a starter in the summer games, is expected to make his first appearance in the tournament after Trey Augustine played the opening game.
