We’re nearing the end of the World Cup group stage with some groups only having one game left. So far, France, Portugal and Brazil are the only teams to have secured a place in the round of 16, but they will be joined by more in the final match of each group. Qatar also joined South Africa as the only World Cup hosts to fail to qualify for the group stage. But let’s take a look at who could join the trio from the last 16 and what their path is to get there.

Looking at the scorers, the start is simple, with the team with the most points going forward. If two teams have the same number of points, it will be their total goal difference. If they still cannot be split, the team with the most goals will go ahead. The rules will then be re-applied only in the two-to-one tie between the two teams that have reached the tie. So the points total for that match is after head-to-head goal difference and goals scored. If they make it all the way and can’t be split, they end up in the fair game system.

According to the fair play system, the team with the fewest penalties per match will advance. So a team loses a point for a yellow card, three points for each red card caused by a second yellow card, four points for a red card, and if a direct red card is issued after a yellow card, it will count as five points.
